Justin Trudeau buys drones \u201ctested\u201d on Palestinians<\/h3>\n

Canada has an anti-Palestinian\u00a0record<\/a> second to none. B\"\"ut recent moves suggest the government of Liberal Prime Minister\u00a0Justin Trudeau<\/a> is escalating its enmity towards the Palestinian people. There was Trudeau\u2019s\u00a0decision<\/a>\u00a0in November to appoint\u00a0Irwin Cotler<\/a>, a prominent Israel lobbyist, as special envoy on anti-Semitism.<\/p>\n

Cotler is tasked with implementing the so-called\u00a0IHRA definition of anti-Semitism<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 a document promoted by Israel and its lobby as a tool to censor and smear supporters of Palestinian rights by falsely tarring them as anti-Jewish bigots.<\/p>\n

The following month, Trudeau\u2019s government placed itself in a tiny minority, along with fellow settler-colonial states Israel, the US and Australia, to\u00a0vote against<\/a>\u00a0UN resolutions reaffirming fundamental Palestinian rights.<\/p>\n

And in recent days, Canada lined up again with the US and Australia to\u00a0condemn the ruling<\/a> by the International Criminal Court clearing the way for war crimes investigations of Israeli leaders. This anti-Palestinian extremism belies Trudeau\u2019s fluffy image as\u00a0woke hipster<\/a>\u00a0who supports LGBTQ rights and multiculturalism.<\/p>\n

But it is entirely in keeping with Canada\u2019s\u00a0ongoing<\/a>\u00a0mistreatment<\/a>\u00a0of the Indigenous peoples on whose\u00a0land it sits<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 in spite of Trudeau\u2019s\u00a0rhetorical commitment<\/a>\u00a0to \u201creconciliation\u201d with First Nations.<\/p>\n

Greenwashing<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Now the Trudeau government is\u00a0purchasing<\/a>\u00a0a \u201ccivilian\u201d version of the Hermes 900 drone made by Israeli weapons manufacturer\u00a0Elbit Systems<\/a>. The deal announced in December by Canada\u2019s transport ministry is worth $28 million.<\/p>\n

As Israeli media\u00a0reported<\/a>, the Hermes 900 was first \u201ctested\u201d by Israel during its 2014 assault on Gaza. Israel\u00a0killed<\/a>\u00a0more than 2,200 Palestinians, including 550 children during that assault, in attacks that frequently\u00a0obliterated<\/a>\u00a0entire families<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A major weapons supplier to the Israeli military, Elbit was\u00a0deeply involved<\/a>\u00a0in, and reaped huge profits from, that attack on Gaza.<\/p>\n

Canada is greenwashing the purchase from Elbit by claiming the drones will be used for surveillance of the Arctic region, including \u201cto detect oil spills, survey ice and marine habitats.\u201d This purchase, the Trudeau government claims, will help \u201cto keep our waters clean and safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

In fact, what it will do is put money into the hands of Israel\u2019s blood-soaked arms industry, effectively rewarding it for perpetrating war crimes whose investigation and prosecution Trudeau opposes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lethal trade<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Indeed, while the Trudeau government\u00a0claims<\/a>\u00a0to be a global champion of human rights, it has\u00a0massively expanded<\/a> its arms trade with Saudi Arabia, despite that country\u2019s brutal war on Yemen. Last month, activists protested<\/a>\u00a0the Trudeau policy by blocking the entrance of a Hamilton, Ontario, factory that ships weapons to the Saudis.<\/p>\n

And now\u00a0Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East<\/a>, an advocacy group, is urging Canadians to write the Trudeau government opposing the Elbit deal.<\/p>\n

\u201cThrough this purchase, Canada directly supports the profits of a weapons company responsible for ongoing human rights violations against Palestinians,\u201d CJPME says in an\u00a0action alert<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As CJPME\u00a0notes<\/a>\u00a0in a useful backgrounder, Elbit brags that the \u201ccivilian\u201d drones Trudeau\u2019s government is purchasing draw on the \u201clegacy<\/a>\u201d of its killer drones used on Palestinians.<\/p>\n

Fake friends<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Perhaps sensitive to how\u00a0unpopular<\/a>\u00a0its anti-Palestinian policies are with ordinary Canadians, the Trudeau government falsely portrays itself as a friend of Palestinians.<\/p>\n

Through its diplomatic office in Ramallah, Canada purports to support the \u201cempowerment\u201d of Palestinian women. And a Canadian general has been making the rounds among Palestinian officials, offering \u201ccooperation\u201d:<\/p>\n

Development Officer, Dr. Khaled Rajab, visited the Mehwar Center for Protection and Empowerment of Women in #Beit_Sahour<\/a> and met with the Director of the Center, Mrs. Saeda Al-Atrash. Support for the center is provided through the funded Haya project.<\/p>\n

No one should be fooled by this.<\/p>\n

Canada is no friend if it seeks to obstruct justice at the International Criminal Court, votes against Palestinian rights at the UN, smears human rights advocates as anti-Semites and makes deals with Israeli arms companies that profit from killing Palestinians.<\/p>\n
