{"id":2817,"date":"2020-10-02T21:59:00","date_gmt":"2020-10-02T21:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/paju.org\/?p=2817"},"modified":"2020-10-03T22:01:15","modified_gmt":"2020-10-03T22:01:15","slug":"end-of-occupation-no-1025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/paju.org\/fr\/end-of-occupation-no-1025\/","title":{"rendered":"\u00ab End of Occupation \u00bb No 1025"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Incoming ambassador to UK called for \u201cexpanding\u201d Israel\u2019s borders<\/h3>\n<p><strong>By <a href=\"https:\/\/electronicintifada.net\/people\/asa-winstanley\">Asa Winstanley<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Israel\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/electronicintifada.net\/blogs\/asa-winstanley\/israels-next-uk-ambassador-settler-extremist\">incoming ambassador to the UK<\/a>\u00a0has called for \u201cexpanding\u201d Israel into neighbouring Arab countries, a video of an old speech shows.<\/p>\n<p>In it,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/electronicintifada.net\/tags\/tzipi-hotovely\">Tzipi Hotovely<\/a>\u00a0expressed her preference for right-wing Zionist anthem \u201cTwo Banks to the Jordan,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/zemer.nli.org.il\/song\/Bait_Lazemer004059790&amp;SysNum\">a Hebrew<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20070928015519\/http:\/www.zfa.org.il\/articles\/jabotinsky.html\">song<\/a>\u00a0which in 1929 laid claim to the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2820 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/paju.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/1025-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"130\" \/>entirety of Palestine and what became the state of Jordan.<\/p>\n<p>Having earlier in the speech criticized some Israeli politicians for the \u201cmentality that doesn\u2019t look 20 years ahead,\u201d she articulated her vision for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/electronicintifada.net\/blogs\/patrick-strickland\/land-ours-says-israels-top-diplomat-citing-religious-texts\">what she has called<\/a>\u00a0Greater Israel.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>She explained in the speech: \u201cWe must not settle for preserving what exists. We must always look forward and ask ourselves: What do we want for the next generation? Do we want to see our enemies continuing the Islamic revolution on our eastern frontline? Or do we want to see the state of Israel expanding?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The song\u2019s chorus goes: \u201cTwo banks has the [River] Jordan \/ This is ours and that is as well\u201d before continuing in a verse exclaiming: \u201cLet my right hand whither \/ If I forget the East Bank of the Jordan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hotovely went on in her speech to imply that the \u201cexpanding\u201d of Israel should also include Syria: \u201cif only those people in Syria had a little bit of the rights that Israeli Arabs have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cExpanding\u201d into Syria<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As well as dismaying Syrians, the suggestion by Israel\u2019s next UK ambassador that she would like to see Israel \u201cexpanding\u201d on both sides of the River Jordan will also alarm Jordanians \u2013 at least half of whom are the descendants of Palestinian refugees expelled by Zionist forces in 1947 and since.<\/p>\n<p>Israel already occupies a large tract of Syrian land \u2013 the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/electronicintifada.net\/tags\/golan-heights\">Golan Heights<\/a>, which it illegally annexed in 1980.<\/p>\n<p>When Israel invaded in 1967,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/golan-marsad.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Al-Marsad-Forgotten-Occupation.pdf\">they drove out more than 95 percent<\/a>\u00a0of the population of the Golan \u2013 130,000 Syrians \u2013 and systematically destroyed hundreds of villages and one city.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, the refugees have been blocked by Israel from returning, while\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/golan-marsad.org\/topic\/illegal-settlements\/\">around 23,000<\/a>\u00a0Israeli settlers now dominate the occupied territory.<\/p>\n<p>Despite Hotovely\u2019s claims, the remaining Syrians in the occupied Golan Heights today are still not treated with equality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiscriminatory Israeli policies continue to violate the basic human rights of Syrians who have become second-class citizens in the land of their birth,\u201d the Syrian human rights group Al-Marsad says.<\/p>\n<p>Hotovely gave her speech in 2012, addressing a radical group of West Bank settlers called the \u201cWomen in Green\u201d at a conference at a settlement in Hebron.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cJordan is a historic compromise\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One year later, as a junior minister, she\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/Diplomacy-and-Politics\/Hotovely-laments-Likud-schizophrenia-on-two-states-324563\">told a Likud Party event<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cthe existence of [the state of] Jordan is a historic compromise\u201d and that \u201cwhoever believes in the Greater Land of Israel has never been prepared to give parts of our homeland away for any purpose, not even for peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/actionnetwork.org\/petitions\/reject-hotovely\">petition by British Jews<\/a>\u00a0launched\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejc.com\/news\/uk\/petition-calls-on-uk-to-reject-new-israeli-ambassador-1.500674\">in June<\/a>\u00a0calling for the UK to reject Hotovely as ambassador now has almost 1,900 signatures.<\/p>\n<p>Although she was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/.premium-israeli-cabinet-confirms-six-new-ambassadors-and-consuls-abroad-1.9040393\">confirmed by the Israeli cabinet<\/a>\u00a0in August, current minister for settlements Hotovely\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jewishnews.timesofisrael.com\/tzipi-hotovely-wont-arrive-as-israeli-envoy-to-uk-until-after-high-holy-days\/\">is yet to arrive in the UK<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The last ambassador, Mark Regev,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MarkRegev\/status\/1274738763617492993\">left the UK<\/a>\u00a0in June and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OhadZemet\/status\/1273270458994098176\">the deputy ambassador<\/a>\u00a0has been serving as charg\u00e9e d\u2019affaires since. Regev returned to his position at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MarkRegev\/status\/1293506749555761155\">the Israeli prime minister\u2019s office in August<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Asked if she stood by the speech, Tzipi Hotovely and the Israeli embassy did not reply to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo Banks to the Jordan\u201d was written by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/electronicintifada.net\/tags\/zeev-jabotinsky\">Vladamir \u201cZeev\u201d Jabotinsky<\/a>, the founder of right-wing Zionism and the ideological grandfather of the ruling Likud Party to which both Hotovely and Prime Minister\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/electronicintifada.net\/tags\/benjamin-netanyahu\">Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a>\u00a0belong.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.972mag.com\/what-did-they-teach-my-son-at-etzel-museum\/\">logo of the Irgun militia<\/a>\u00a0founded by Jabotinsky includes a map of the entirety of Palestine and Jordan.<\/p>\n<p>In her speech, Hotovely advocated for the right-wing Zionist anthem over another Hebrew song, \u201cFor All These Things,\u201d by songwriter Naomi Shemer.
