Celine Dion to perform on ethnically cleansed land<\/h3>\n

Canadian singer Celine Dion is set to perform in an Israeli park this summer built on top of ethnically-cleansed Palestinian land.<\/p>\n

Dion is scheduled to perform during Tu B\u2019Av, celebrated by some as Israel\u2019s \"\"Valentine\u2019s Day, in August. The venue \u2013 Yarkon Park in Tel Aviv \u2013 is built<\/a> on the ruins of Jarisha, a village that was completely depopulated<\/a> of its Palestinian inhabitants by the Irgun<\/a>, a Zionist militia, in May 1948.<\/p>\n

Weeks earlier, the Irgun, led by future Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin<\/a>, had carried out the notorious massacre<\/a> in the village of Deir Yassin<\/a>, which sowed panic and fear across Palestine.<\/p>\n

Zionist paramilitary forces ethnically cleansed some 800,000 Palestinians during the 1948 Nakba to clear the way for the establishment of the State of Israel.<\/p>\n

Yarkon Park<\/a> has been the site<\/a> of a number of such concerts<\/a> and festivals<\/a> that help whitewash Israel\u2019s crimes against Palestinians.<\/p>\n

By rebuffing the Palestinian call for a boycott of Israel, these concerts are tantamount to crossing an international picket line.<\/p>\n

The Canadian singer prepared a video message expressing her excitement to perform \u201cfor the very first time in Tel Aviv.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fifty Palestinian musicians, actors and artists are urging<\/a> Dion to heed the call by Palestinian civil society not to perform in Israel.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe far-right Israeli regime exploits all performances by international artists to whitewash, or artwash, its systematic violation of Palestinian human rights,\u201d the artists said in a letter appealing to Dion.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn this context, all artists have an ethical obligation to do no harm to our struggle for justice.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cConsider Mandela\u2019s words\u201d<\/h2>\n

Notably, Dion named<\/a> one of her twin sons after Nelson Mandela, who headed the liberation movement against South Africa\u2019s apartheid government. Dion met<\/a> Mandela during a trip to South Africa in 2008 and mourned his death<\/a> in 2013.<\/p>\n

The Palestinian appeal to Dion quoted a comment made by Mandela on the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People in December 1997.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know too well that our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians<\/em>,\u201d Mandala declared<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is in this spirit that I have come to join you today to add our own voice to the universal call<\/em> for Palestinian self-determination and statehood<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Signatories urged Dion to \u201cto consider Mandela\u2019s words and her own place in the history books.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Palestinian boycott, divestment and sanctions movement is modeled on the global campaign that had helped end apartheid in South Africa.<\/p>\n

The organization Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East is also urging<\/a> the artist to cancel the performance.<\/p>\n

And the Canadian BDS Coalition has issued an appeal to Dion. It was signed<\/a> by Roger Waters and Thurston Moore, best known for their work with the bands Pink Floyd and Sonic Youth, as well as many other artists.<\/p>\n

Astroturfing<\/h2>\n

4IL, a propaganda outlet of Israel\u2019s strategic affairs ministry, celebrated Dion\u2019s planned performance and urged social media users to \u201cshow her some love.\u201d The Israeli government-backed Act.IL app<\/a> was used to launch a fake grassroots social media campaign \u2013 a tactic known as astroturfing<\/a> \u2013 that directs users<\/a> to praise the singer\u2019s planned performance.<\/p>\n

Israel advocacy group StandWithUs<\/a> is attempting to depoliticize Dion\u2019s concert.<\/p>\n

\u201cMusic should never be politicized, and instead of bringing people together, the haters are trying to encourage division,\u201d the group stated<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The notorious Islamophobic bigot Pamela Geller was thrilled about Dion\u2019s upcoming performance, calling it a \u201cBDS fail\u201d on Twitter. The world\u2019s greatest artists are flocking to Israel,\u201d Geller added.<\/p>\n

Israeli concert promoter Shuki Weiss is organizing the event and financing<\/a> the construction of the amphitheater where Dion\u2019s concert is set to take place.<\/p>\n

Weiss is a long-time opponent of the BDS movement and has helped<\/a> artists cross the international picket line set by Palestinians. He has also urged Israel\u2019s parliament, the Knesset, to intervene by persuading artists to come to Israel.<\/p>\n
