Free speech, but not for Palestine<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

On Nov. 20, Israel advocacy group Herut Canada\nat York University held an event with former soldiers from the Israeli Defence\nForces (IDF). The IDF has held recruitment drives in Toronto, and it\u2019s illegal\nfor a foreign military to recruit in Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the Palestine solidarity club on campus,\nStudents Against Israeli Apartheid (SAIA) York, we decided to protest our\nuniversity administration\u2019s decision to provide space for the event.<\/p>\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n

Despite us reaching out to the administration\nwith concerns about harassment and intimidation by pro-Israel groups and their\nallies in the Jewish Defence League (JDL) \u2014 classified as a terrorist organization\nin the U.S. \u2014 the event was approved. Our concerns proved to be well-founded as\nJDL members began physically assaulting protesters soon after the event began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among those affected are York\nstudents and community members and their families whom the event was intended\nto intimidate into passivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this is not how local and\nnational media outlets reported the event. Despite there not being a shred of\nevidence, figures from the political elite as prominent as Justin Trudeau,\nMichael Levitt, Andrew Scheer and Doug Ford were united in claiming that\npro-Palestine activists engaged in racist chanting and violence. But the\navailable video evidence \u2014 widely shared over social media \u2014 reveals the exact\nopposite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Wednesday night, violence & racist chants broke out against an event organized by the Jewish community at York University. What happened that night was shocking and absolutely unacceptable. Anti-Semitism has no place in Canada. We will always denounce it & all forms of hatred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of the manufactured\ncontroversy apparently revolves around our use of the Arabic term \u201cintifada,\u201d\nwhich means \u201cuprising.\u201d This is ridiculous, and the JDL and their allies are\nsnowflakes for being offended. The term is to be understood within the context\nof ongoing Palestinian resistance to Israel\u2019s continued illegal occupation of\nPalestinian land, violations of international law and documented war crimes. In\nfact, the majority of resistance activities against the occupation have been\nincidents of civil disobedience and nonviolent protest in the face of the might\nof the Israeli army. As late as last week, 34 Palestinians, including eight\nchildren, were killed by Israel\u2019s indiscriminate bombardment and collective\npunishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us be clear \u2014 we believe that the purpose of\nthis event was to harass and intimidate York students and, in particular,\nPalestinian students. The documented instances of physical assault by members\nof pro-Israel groups bears this out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But if members of pro-Israel groups at York\nUniversity have the freedom to host a lecture by members of a foreign military\nthat violates the rights of York\u2019s Palestinian students and their families, it\nmust also be recognized that Palestinians at York and supporters of their\nrights have the freedom to peacefully express their opposition to this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is our right under the Canadian Charter of\nRights and Freedoms. And we will fight to protect it should the university\nadministration \u2014 or the government \u2014 seek to deprive us of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
