{"id":2427,"date":"2019-12-06T13:19:00","date_gmt":"2019-12-06T13:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/paju.org\/?p=2427"},"modified":"2019-12-07T13:24:46","modified_gmt":"2019-12-07T13:24:46","slug":"end-of-occupation-no-982","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/paju.org\/fr\/end-of-occupation-no-982\/","title":{"rendered":"\u00ab End of Occupation \u00bb No 982"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Harvard students walk out en masse from Israeli consul talk (and liberal Zionists are saddened)<\/h3>\n<p>In yet another sign that Palestinian solidarity activists are getting room inside mainstream institutions, scores of Harvard students walked out on the Israeli consul <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2430 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/paju.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/982-1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/paju.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/982-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/paju.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/982-1.jpg 580w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>general yesterday as he began a talk at Harvard Law School on the settlement project. The students were largely silent and held up signs saying, \u201cSettlements are a War Crime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dani Dayan spoke to a largely-empty room and expressed contempt for the demonstrators as being like kindergartners.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>More than 100 students \u201cfrom across Harvard\u201d walked out, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/m.facebook.com\/notes\/harvard-college-palestine-solidarity-committee\/students-walk-out-of-israeli-ambassadors-lecture-on-legal-settlements\/3245914142117329\/\">Palestine Solidarity Committee<\/a>\u00a0at the school. Most of the hall empties in this v<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/raza_hamzah\/status\/1194692536725639168?s=20\">ideo of the protest posted by\u00a0<\/a>Hamzah Raza, a student at Harvard\u2019s Divinity School.<\/p>\n<p>Dayan is himself a settler and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hls.harvard.edu\/event\/the-legal-strategy-of-israeli-settlements-a-lecture-by-israeli-ambassador-dani-dayan-wednesday-nov-13-2019-12-1pm\/\">spoke on\u00a0<\/a>the \u201clegal strategy of Israeli settlements.\u201d He was sponsored by a program on Jewish and Israeli law at the Law School, and introduced by Noah Feldman, a Harvard law professor and expert on religion,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Harvard4Bernie\/status\/1194715855034015744\">who said that<\/a>\u00a0the invitation did not represent an endorsement of Dayan\u2019s views, but a desire to engage his views.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/m.facebook.com\/notes\/harvard-college-palestine-solidarity-committee\/students-walk-out-of-israeli-ambassadors-lecture-on-legal-settlements\/3245914142117329\/\">The Palestine Solidarity Committee posted\u00a0<\/a>a photograph of the largely empty hall after the walkout. It shared credit for the protest with the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/waterjusticeinpalestine.org\/mission\">Alliance for Water Justice in Palestine<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dayan\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AmbDaniDayan\/status\/1194700796002291712\">thanked Harvard<\/a>\u00a0for hosting him at its \u201cmost prestigious institution.\u201d But the Palestine Solidarity Committee\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/m.facebook.com\/notes\/harvard-college-palestine-solidarity-committee\/students-walk-out-of-israeli-ambassadors-lecture-on-legal-settlements\/3245914142117329\/\">statement reports that he was disdainful:<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Smiling at the sight of the protesters silently leaving the room, Dayan remarked: \u201cI remember a time doing something similar in my kindergarten.\u201d He later tweeted (translated): \u201cOn my way back to NYC I\u2019m thinking why are these people so happy with themselves? A bunch of losers trembling in fear of the disciplinary committees of their school.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That statement characterized the protest as part of a trend:<\/p>\n<p><em>This event is part of a growing momentum on Harvard\u2019s campus for justice in Palestine. \u201cWe do not intend on sitting out on complicity in oppression,\u201d a student organizer remarked. \u201cNot at Harvard, not anywhere else.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Palestine Solidarity<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HarvardPSC\/status\/1194758588654178304\">\u00a0Committee also tweeted,<\/a>\u00a0\u201cWe cannot tolerate his extremist views.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Israeli human rights attorney Michael Sfard was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/michael.sfard\/videos\/10156972229645805\/\">pleased by the demonstration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Liberal Zionist Richard\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/_goldwasser_\/status\/1194730231569043457?s=11\">Goldwasser seconded the idea that\u00a0<\/a>the protest reflects a trend\u2013 and Israel better get with it. He endorsed the walkout but said he was saddened.<\/p>\n<p><em>I support protesting Dayan. At the same time, this saddens me. It\u2019s only going to grow. Israel needs to change course. Now.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Palestine Solidarity statement was not saddened:<\/p>\n<p><em>Dayan is a vocal advocate for the illegal expansion of Israeli settlements into Palestinian territory.
